Defining Deforestation
As defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, deforestation is the "permanent removal of standing forests,". The destruction of natural forests occurs when trees are cut down for logging, making space for cattle grazing, mining, extraction of oil, building dams and population expansion .
